The Stories that Ships Tell Grade 5/6 Lesson Unit

This lesson contains a lesson plan file and 16 BLMs.

Students will represent their investigation of the history of immigration into Canada through the eyes of a traveler on the Komagata Maru. This story will be told through a portrait drawing of an individual who traveled on that ship.  Inspired by, The Arrival by Shaun Tan, a book that tells the story of a migration through wordless images, students will learn to create visual narratives.

Students will learn to use drawing tools and techniques to create realistic proportions of facial features in a portrait.  They will learn drawing skills to articulate a subject’s expression, clothing and artifacts creating a portrait that retells information about an individual’s past.
